Plans have been drawn up for a long-range compact electric car with batteries between the front and rear seats to maximise space because of concerns about the trend for “supersized” cars.

In most electric cars the batteries are under the floor but that can add height, weight and structural complexities and an extended wheelbase. In the new model rear seats would face backwards.

It is claimed that the new design by the London-based engineering company Page-Roberts would be lighter and more streamlined than comparable models, potentially extending the range by up to a third.
