Kia EV4: Seltos-sized small electric SUV slated for 2022 launch – report

Kia’s EV range will expand next year with a new small SUV sized similarly to today’s Seltos, reports The Korean Car Blog.

Kia is developing two new dedicated electric SUVs – the first of which will launch in 2022, sized similarly to today’s Seltos and Stonic.

Online publication The Korean Car Blog quotes well-placed sources indicating Kia is preparing a second electric SUV to sit below the new mid-size EV6: a small SUV of similar dimensions to the current Seltos and Stonic (plus the US-market Soul), set to wear the EV4 or EV5 nameplate.

It’s slated to launch “sometime” in 2022, according to the outlet.

Riding on Hyundai and Kia’s new E-GMP dedicated electric vehicle platform, the EV4/EV5 is said to measure 4.3 metres long – 70mm shorter than a Seltos, but 160mm longer than a Stonic, placing it in the small SUV category in Australia.

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, the website claims the EV’s dedicated electric ‘skateboard’ platform and longer wheelbase will see it offer similar interior space to the new-generation, combustion-powered Sportage.

Specifications for the EV4 have yet to be confirmed, though using the EV6 as a guide, expect a choice of single- and dual-motor configurations, multiple battery sizes and power outputs up to 239kW.

While we’ve yet to catch a clear look at the new model, spy photos published by The Korean Car Blog (above and below) are claimed to show the new EV4 (or EV5) in heavy camouflage, with an upright body shell, sporty rear diffuser element, and a rising window line.

The real-world images align with a shadowy teaser released earlier this year, depicting a small electric SUV with a compact footprint and boxy proportions.

Further details of the new 2022 Kia EV4 (or EV5) will almost certainly emerge in the coming months.

The online publication’s timeline aligns with previous confirmation from Kia that it will launch one electric vehicle next year – suggesting the electric version of the next-generation Niro has been pushed back to 2023, following the hybrids due in 2022, with a similar staggered rollout strategy adopted with the previous-generation model.

It’s just one of 11 electric vehicles Kia plans to offer in 2027, including seven models based on the dedicated E-GMP architecture – four of which will be SUVs or people movers.
