Charged EVs | A new method for testing the thermal runaway risk of EV battery enclosures

Applied safety science company UL Solutions has announced a new test for evaluating the thermal runaway risk of materials in EV battery enclosures.

“With this offering, UL Solutions addresses industry concerns by providing automotive OEMs and suppliers, and automotive component and system manufacturers, testing and advisory solutions to meet multiple standards and regulations,” says the Director of Product Management in the Engineered Materials group at UL Solutions Eric Bulington.

The Battery Enclosure Thermal Runaway Evaluation is based on the recently published UL 2596 standard. It screens different material formulas during R&D, evaluates materials and battery assemblies and simulates thermal runaway scenarios. “The evaluations entail testing material plaques versus the entire battery assembly, reducing testing costs and development time for resin manufacturers and material suppliers,” says UL Solutions.
